Clan Tartans

PAISLEY

SUNDRUM

There is no specific tartan for the Cathcart name.

Most tartans were invented, and assigned to Clans in the 19th Century amidst a fervor of revival for all things Scottish instigated by Sir Walter Scott, and later further endorsed by Prince Albert and Queen Victoria's love of Balmoral.

The Cathcarts were always sufficiently well off to be able to afford trousers and along with most lowland Scots scoffed at the red shanked legs of the highlander.

Today most Lowland families have proclaimed their Scottish roots by adopting or designing a specific tartan.

Cathcarts were granted their lands by the High Steward of Scotland whose descendants inherited the Scottish Crown as the Stewarts. Cathcart estates were thus held directly from the crown. However Royal Stewart tartan should only be worn by members of the Royal Family.

Tartans associated with the family are the Paisley district tartan due to the proximity of Cathcart itself and the Family’s association with the famous Paisley Abbey over the centuries.

Sundrum now has its own exclusive tartan for the estate residents and because of the castle's long possession by the family it too can be worn by Cathcarts.

The Sundrum Tartan can only be supplied by special order.
